Mechanism of Addiction and Recovery: Understanding the Pathway and the Process
Presented by: Carlo DiClemente, PhD
This presentation uses the perspective of the Transtheoretical Model to explore the key elements of the journey into addiction and recovery highlighting key mechanisms involved in developing and modifying addictive behaviors. The first involves understanding important tasks and mechanisms involved in initiation and recovery (stages and processes). The second focuses on developing a multidimensional comprehensive view of substance use behavior and how it becomes enmeshed in the life of the individual and difficult to change (Mechanisms of Addiction). The third is to examine the client contributions to recovery and the difference between change producing (behavior specific) mechanisms delineated by the Transtheoretical Model and change regulating (Self-Control) mechanisms. How to address these individual differences in treatment will be discussed.
