Intensive Basic Training available during Four Directions!

By popular demand, we’ve added Intensive Basic Training to this year’s Four Directions Conference! If you’re looking to become a Certified Problem Gambling Counselor, completing the 30-hour basic training is the first step.

Our annual problem gambling and health awareness conference, Four Directions, is held this year at the beautiful Tulalip Resort Casino. The conference runs from November 3-6, and the basic training is offered from November 5-8. Registrants have the option to come for the basic training, or to spend a full six days and attend the first two days of the conference before the basic training starts.

We’re offering the six day package at a special rate to encourage participation in the cultural components of Four Directions. The first two days offer many unique opportunities to experience: take an enlightening tour of the Hibulb Cultural Center, participate in a Talking Circle, and learn from the wisdom of speakers as they discuss the roles of storytelling, rituals and traditional food and medicines in addictions treatment.

Intensive Basic Training for Problem Gambling Counselor Certification

November 5-8
Presenters: Linda Graves, MS, NCGC-II and Lori Rugle, PhD, NCGC-II

Participants will learn about the scope and prevalence of gambling and problem gambling on a national scale, risk factors, and how the increased availability of gambling over the past ten years has affected the prevalence of gambling problems in the United States. The DSM-5 criteria for pathological gambling will be discussed, and participants will learn practical application of the most commonly used screening and diagnostic tools. This training outlines the types and sub-types of gamblers and several approaches to the treatment of problem gamblers. Participants will also learn about the disorders that most often co-occur with problem gambling, and the effects of the disorder on family and loved ones. The training will conclude with ethics in treatment and care, relapse prevention and financial exercises. This course fulfills the 30-hour requirement needed for certification.
